So, it’s decided, we’re moving! To North Carolina! Hooray! (and if you don't know what I'm talking about, see yesterday's big reveal post)
Can you tell I’m excited? But also scared (I've only been to the east coast once!). And a little sad too (I love living in California!). However, this means that we’re only a year and a half away from being able to buy a house, instead of 10+ years, like we would be if we stayed in California.
It wasn’t an easy decision to get here though.
Back in September when we started talking about the possibility of moving somewhere more affordable than the Bay Area, we kept expecting to find some way to be able to stay here. We did a ton of number crunching, savings projections, and even did a comparison against several cities across the country, looking at average home prices, salaries for similar jobs to what we have now, etc. Nothing looked good for us staying here, considering a 20% down payment on a comparable house to what we currently rent in the Bay Area is at least $200k. We didn't want to have to make the major sacrifices that a lot of people do around here, like living in ultra-tiny homes, living in a bad neighborhood, or commuting 3+ hours a day.
And then we started talking to our friends about the possibility of moving, and not a single person could help us out. Nobody knew a magic answer that would allow us to stay here and be able to afford a house before we’re 40, and be able to retire before we’re 80. As it turns out, our friends who didn't sacrifice what type of home/location they wanted all had their parent's help with their home purchase. Definitely not something we wanted to do, even if it was an option. We wanted to be able to buy a good sized house, in a good area, on our own.
So slowly, even though we didn’t want to, we gave up on living the rest of our lives here (although the minute we win the lottery, we’ll be back in a flash). After lots and lots and lots of research, we narrowed down our choices of where to move, to either Colorado or North Carolina, and visited both places. Which I wrote about here, but made you all think they were just vacations, and not scouting missions. ;)
Denver was amazing, and we probably would have picked it, if we hadn’t also visited Raleigh/Durham. But the fact that your money goes further in NC than it does in Denver won out, even though the east coast weather does still scare me.
After visiting both places we made a crazy-big matrix of all our criteria for a place to live, and then weighted the categories by personal importance. Then, we individually ranked each city, and it came out to about a one percent difference between the two! You can’t argue with the numbers though, and I think it will be great living near at least one of our siblings, since there was no way we would move back to the Pacific Northwest, where my sister still lives.
So now it’s December, at the time I’m writing this, and we’re trying to figure out all the logistics and when we can even move. There’s a lot still up in the air at the moment, and it’s going to be a pain in the ass, but one thing that is certain is that the short term headache of a cross country move will put us in a much better place for our long term life goals!

I think its awesome that you picked a place and are going. I lived in Raleigh as a child and I remember really liking it. You're close to a lot there. You have the mountains and the beaches, you'll get the seasons but they'll be milder that most of the country and trust me our weather isn't that bad out here. I grew up thinking your San Fran weather of it always being gross and 60. How funny.
I can relate, Morgan, because we also don't want to stay in DC long-term, becasue it's just too expensive and also because I can't take the weather. We're hoping to move next year after I finish my master's. The Bay Area would be a great location for us since it's close to family and there are jobs for us, but we've said no to it because of the cost. We've got a few other options on the list right now, which we'll consider over the next year. I'm so happy for you to make a change you know will be better for you in the long-run!
Sounds like you truly did your homework and made the decision that's right for both of you! I hear you about Bay Area prices. But, I love it here and even the thought of renting forever isn't enough to make me want to leave ;) We can always retire to my husband's condo in San Diego, haha. Can't wait to hear all about the place you found to rent, and the one you'll ultimately buy!
Good choice! When we decided to leave Japan we had to decide between America and England. Economics never really came into play, but now that we are here in the Bay Area we know we aren't staying when it's time to have kids.
I'm an east coast girl through and through (born in NYC, moved to VA at 3 and been here since). I don't think I'd ever want to live anywhere else. The weather can be a little crazy (we're supposed to have freezing rain today, a little crazy for almost-April), but I love having the seasons and it's a great place to raise a family. Hope you like it here on the (right) coast! (Kidding! I've never been to CA and totally want to visit someday!)
I'm inspired by your big move! I hear you about all the sacrifices people in the Bay Area make to just afford to survive here, and this may come off weird but I'm glad to see educated, talented people leaving because of that (I plan on leaving too, moving to the midwest). The prices here are unacceptable even with the depressed market.
Kudos for realizing that there is more to life than being a slave to your mortgage. I wish I would have realized that sooner, now that we own a tiny condo that will likely crumble to the ground in the upcoming inevitable earthquake. Huge sighs.
I think it is so awesome that you guys are doing this! I would be scared to death, but so escited for a new adventure! You guys are going to have so much fun starting fresh! :)
I've never been to NC, but I've heard it's gorgeous! :) So excited for you guys and your next adventure - you'll do great!
I loved hearing about your decision process. I'd expect nothing less than a crazy-big matrix from you! :)
Welcome to the east coast!! I promise, the weather in NC isn't nearly as bad as it is in NY. And if you need some heat, Myrtel Beach is like 4 hrs away... Hilton Head (especially for golfers) 5 hrs and the Outer Banks is 3. I did the Durham area for a while and it's a wonderful place to be. Best of luck to you two :)
Aww, you would've been pretty close to be in Colorado! I'm so excited for you guys, though! I've never been to NC, but I've heard great things!
I'm so happy for you two!!! Can't wait to read more about your journey, and then hello, house hunting :) You will love the East Coast, there are some great people out that way, and those who hail from that end, ahem. If I know, you have the move all spreadsheet and mapped out - just add in a budget line item for celebrating, and start the South Africa vacation fund stat. Until then, enjoy packing?
Raleigh is one of my all-time favorite cities. Top 5 for me. (I went to college down there.) I can't wait to see you next time I visit NC!!!
This is a very interesting blog, very instructive and informing in all. This post, in partucular, has been very helpful.

Yeah, it's all about the homework. You need to be thorough with the whole house hunting bit so you can cover your bases in the long run. Buying a house is great, especially when you have the peace of mind that you got yourselves a good deal out of it.
