I am super lazy. Which you all know if you've read this blog for any length of time. So lazy, in fact, that I used to get our groceries delivered from Safeway, even though they frequently got the wrong brand or made weird substitutions. Going to the grocery store blows, at least in my opinion. But being an adult means doing a lot of things we don't like doing, and since I do love food and eating (just not the shopping for and cooking of the food), and we don't have Safeway where we live now, I have to go grocery shopping myself.
But I've figured out a way to minimize my shopping to just one major shopping trip per month, and then a quick grab-a-few-perishable-things trip half way through the month. By planning out our meals for a month!
Yes, it's about a $300-$350 shopping trip once a month, and our cart is overflowing and the checker hates us because we hold up the line with so much stuff. But it's so nice to not have to go every week that it's worth the bit of planning and hassle of getting it all to fit in the cart.
First, I make a list of all the dinners we're going to eat for the next 4 weeks, and print it out and put it on our fridge. It's kind of fun to know what I'm going to be eating for dinner in advance--I can look forward to trying a new recipe!
Then I go through all of the recipes ingredients lists and my grocery shopping list is mostly complete, except for yogurt and sandwich and salad stuff for breakfast and lunches.
I'm also a little anal and like to sort my shopping list by what section of the store each item is in, which saves me from missing too many things and having to backtrack through the store. Anything to minimize my time grocery shopping!
This meal planning thing has been working really well for us lately, and ever since I started doing it, not once have I found myself halfway through making a meal without a vital ingredient handy. Which is not a fun situation to be in, but can be easily avoided with a little planning.
And what have I made lately? A lot of old standby recipes that I've already posted on this blog, but also a couple of new recipes, including this Balsamic Chicken with Roasted Vegetables (although I changed up the types of veggies to cater more to what my husband and I like):
I'd also been dying to try this crab cake recipe from Mrs. Cheeseburger for several months, and finally did last week. Seriously delish, especially with a side salad and a sauce made out of fat free mayo, Italian dressing, tons of garlic powder and some basil.
And on Sunday, Miss Magic was nice enough to invite us to a fun BBQ at her house, for which I had to break out some yummy (and healthy) appetizer recipes. I have a slight obsession with both mini and stuffed appetizers, so I made a tray of Smoked Salmon Cucumber Cups and Mini Caprese Bites.
I've long since lost the recipe link for the Mini Caprese Bites, but here's the recipe that I fished out of an email to a friend from back in 2007:
Mini Caprese Bites
- 40 cocktail tomatoes
- 1/2 ball whole milk mozzarella
- Bernsteins Restaurant Recipe Italian Salad Dressing (make sure it's the restaurant version, much better)
- Crushed basil leaves
Do you plan out your meals in advance? Does it make your grocery shopping go a lot smoother? And who's with me on hating going to the grocery store?

We plan our meals, but only for a week at a time. With leftovers/eating out, each trip usually ends up lasting about two weeks, so we only have to go to the store about twice a month. Not bad! Also, I totally plan my grocery list by store section too! I don't ever miss things that way!
WOW! Super organized, girl!
I hardly ever plan anything in advance because as soon as I do, I'll get home that evening, and whatever I planned sounds like the exact opposite of whatever I'm in the mood for.
Now that we're going to the farmer's market once a week though, we do have to plan a bit more in advance so I can use all of the fresh produce.
And omg, those little mini apps look delicious!!
Are you for hire? Because I have no idea what's for dinner TONIGHT, I have burger thawed but that's as far as my planning goes! Haha
We are big fat fails at planning our meals. And you are on top of it!! I'm with Jess, are you for hire? I'm a freak, because I love going to the grocery store! I just wish I didn't have to go to so many, all over the place. Publix is literally within walking distance, but we also shop at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, and they're both about 30 minutes away, in totally different directions. I only visit those two once a month, but go to Publix at least once a day (I know, awful. They all know my name. It's sad.)
We plan our meals for a week and it makes things so much better!! Also, I love that Cheeseburger and Magic made it on to your dinner list. :)
Ummm, I go to the grocery store almost every day. No joke - it's on my bus route home and I hate moving my car and losing my parking space over groceries. My hubs and I eat out at least once or twice per week, so a big casserole like veggie paella or risotto will get us through most of the other days. Your recipes look yummy and OMG, mini-caprese bites! Hope you had a great time at the BBQ!
OMG I love that you do this! We meal plan one week out, and I'm cool with one grocery store trip per week (we go to TJs almost exclusively, which I think is much less unpleasant than big supermarkets). We try to eat a LOT of fruits and vegetables, and there's no way we could keep everything fresh and crisp in the fridge for half a month. WHAT IS YOUR SECRET?!?!?! :)
Anyway, I'm totally inspired now. We've been slacking a little on our planning, and if you can do it for a MONTH, I can totally do it through this Sunday, at least.
I plan meals a week at a time and shop weekly, too. It's the darn produce that sends me to the store every week! And I hate grocery shopping. Hate hate hate with a major passion. Like you, I sort my list by sections of the store - I get so mad if I have to backtrack to produce when I'm all the way in dairy...
Dang girl - what an intense (but useful) system!
Since we don't have a lot of storage space, I shop only one week at a time. I mostly shop at Publix here, and their sales start on Thursdays and run for week. Each Thursday, I go online to see what is on sale, and I make my grocery list based on those items. I only buy produce that is in season, so when I get home from the store I take note of what I have and create meals from there. I typically have an idea of what meals I'll make, but I like having a bit of wiggle room for creativity (or laziness, depending on the day...)!
looks delish!! You are super organized! I buy fresh food at local markets and buy dry staples once a month-ish
You are definitely the queen of planning and organization, but I do plan out my meals too (at least for a week). I'm not the type that can just whip up something from whatever is around, or add things to my cart willy nilly and figure out what to do with them later. Your food looks delish! I know how you love your crab cakes so it's good to hear you found a recipe that works for you.
I wish I could plan like that but I'm too much of a procrastinator to shake off the habit :P Those appetizers looks scrumptious though!
I plan meals about a week in advance, but I try not to plan for more than four recipes per week. I suck at making large amounts so we can eat leftovers, and if I try to plan any more than that, all my veggies go bad before I can get to them! Bah!
Is that crab or garlic? Because I know you. And I could see you make "crab cakes" but really they'd be garlic cakes.
And delicious.
And heck no, I don't meal plan for more than a few days (week?) at a time. And I hate leftovers for dinner. So I would suck at what you do. Except its smart. I'll give y'all that!
@Hannah, ohmuhgawd! I want to make garlic cakes now! And now that I think of it, the jumbo lump crab meat sort of looks like roasted garlic in my photos....I think I'm inspired now to figure out a way to make garlic cakes! And then I think I will die and go to heaven :)
I must have totally missed this post the first time around because I certainly don't remember drooling over those appetizers like I am now! YUM!!
