Now that our one year wedding anniversary has come and gone, I've started thinking again about what to do with some of our leftover wedding items.
I still haven't gotten around to selling or giving away a few extra decor items and still haven't cleaned any of my wedding event dresses yet. Partly because of laziness, partly because I hate getting rid of stuff, and partly because I ran out of time to take care of these things before our move and they're still packed away.
But this past weekend I did dig out my rehearsal dinner dress from BCBG, because I think I want to try to dye it so I can re-wear it, instead of selling it to someone. If it was a color other than white, I would have a lot more use for it, and I really like the silk floral applique detailing, so I figure it's worth a shot.
Here's a look at my rehearsal dress, so you get an idea of what I'm talking about (the purple sash is not attached):
{From our wedding ceremony rehearsal}
And a close up view of the fabric:
The problem is, the top floral layer of the dress is 100% silk and the under layer is 100% polyester. Googling high and low, time and time again I read that there is no fabric dye that will work on both silk and polyester.
I briefly considered taking apart the seams to separate the layers of the dress, dying them separately , then sewing them back together, but that seems like too much work.
So I kept Googling, reading fabric dying forums, until I found a mention of what is called iDye (for natural fabrics like silk) and iDye Poly (for synthetic fabrics like polyester), which can be mixed together to dye poly-blend fabrics). So I'm guessing (and hoping!) it will work on my two layer dress too.
But now is where I need your help, because I can't decide which color to dye my dress!
I always love bright colors, but then again, they aren't quite as versatile. But I do want something that will go with the floral-ness of the dress. Here's a look at my color choices in red:

And with a little Photoshop fun, here's what the dress could look like once it's dyed:
The yellow is fun, but could be a little too neon, although I really liked Cat Deeley's yellow dress last night on SYTYCD--the lace top might look a bit like my dress would if dyed yellow.
The pink is a bit bright, the purple is a little too "Barney," and the red could be ok, but I just got this other red dress (in fact, I have several red dresses already).
Looking at darker options:
The blue is not too bad, but I'm not sure it totally goes with the flowers, and the green is nice, but again, I couldn't wear it to as many things, just like with the yellow, because it's such a stand out color. The gold is very interesting....it has a lot of potential to be nice and classy but subtle, as long as it doesn't end up being too orange or yellow or dingy looking. I really like the silver grey, however I do already have a silver scoop neck dress with a belt, so I'm not sure I need another one. And of course I already own several LDBs as well, plus I think the black might be a little much for the floral theme of the dress.
This is the sliver dress I already own, what do you think, too close to what my rehearsal dress could become once it's dyed?
Although my silver dress is a bit shiny, as shown better in this photo with a flash:

Basically, I don't think I like the pink or purple, but I'm still debating the other colors. So please weigh in with your opinion, which color would you pick for this dress dying experiment?

I loooooooove the green!!! That's a beautiful color! And I've been totally thinking about dying my rehearsal dress recently- probably navy since I'm too chicken to dye it a brighter color even though I already have a navy dress. Hmmm... dilemma.
If it were me, I would go yellow. I'm a boring person, though. If I were you, I might go with the purple or blue. I love the fun bright colors. Aaaand...go you having the guts to dye a dress!
I would choose green first, blue second. Although I think black and silver are more classic and versatile, they don't seem to fit with the flower detailing. And if you already have one silver dress and a slew of LBDs, I'm not sure that you'd wear it any more often anyway.
Please update us if you do this - I want to hack my wedding dress down into a short dress and dye it, but it's covered in lace. Both the lace and the shell are polyester - the lining is nylon. If yours goes well, I'll give mine a shot!
I thought that when dying fabric, the longer you leave the fabric in the dye bath, the darker it gets? Or that you could control the amount of dye to determine the intensity of color? Or is this a different kind of dye, where what you see is what you get? I really love the yellow & pink, but if you're worried about them being too neon, I'd try to see if you could control the intensity of the color! I'm excited to see how this turns out!
I think fair blonds look amazing in yellow and I think you'd pull it off great. I don't think it'd be too neon, instead it will be very summery and since your anniversary is during the summer, that would be great.
Get a Lilly vibe - yellows, greens, pinks and blues are just great dress colors in general :)
I like the gold and the gray! Both look really good on the dress. I'm interested to see how this stuff works for you, because I'm thinking about getting some for our duvet cover!
Like Amanda, I love the gold or the gray. That gold is really beautiful!! I'm so interested to hear about this because I have a dress I want to dye also!
I kind of like the grey!
I love the blue and the gray. If it was me I would go with Gray since its so versatile. Love the dress by the way.
I'm diggin' the gray! I don't think it's too similar to the one you already have, and gray lends itself well to colorful accessories or different metals.
I love the gold on you! It has more of a vintage look!

Personally, I'm a fan of the Kelly green! I wear it all the time...it's such a happy color!
This is a great idea! I like the blue and the green!
Yes, please update us when you choose and try it! I'm boring as hell; I'd go black or gray. And I really want to dye my wedding dress, which looks similar to your rehearsal dress.
I really like the "darker color" group!!! All of them!
Ahh my favorite dress ever!!!! I have to beg a bit to keep it as is, pretty please?! I know your crafty ways are itching to make it more useful :) all the colors look good. I think the darker colors give it almost a luxurious feel as the original. I'm atrial to navy on it or the grey, though the mustard looks beautiful.
I love that orangly/yellow color! So pretty! I think you should go for it! What do you have to loose? Plus I'm sure it'll turn out way cooler than you could have imagined with that lace and everything!
I love the gold!!
I really like the grey or the purple! :) Great idea!
I like the yellow, and you look so sassy in that second pic ;)
Yellow or green, definitely!
I say purple or....red? It looks kind of pink. I like it, though.
I like yellow, so perfect for summer and yellow looks great on you!
The grey, the bright yellow, or what about an aubergine??
I love the yellow! It's a standout color, but you're a standout kinda gal :) The gray is also very nice. I like the juxtaposition of the soft flowers with a darker color, but it's all a matter of opinion. Thanks for the shout out! I'm catching up with your blog since I was in Hawaii for all of last week ;)
yellow has been my favorite color, so i vote yellow ;) also liking green.
I vote a golden yellow. I think you could REALLY pull it off and it would be really classic with the lace.
