You know how last week I was all "OMG, those non-permanent Command wall hooks are awesome!"?
Yeah, well....
....apparently they're not so awesome for heavy frames. Or maybe it was user error (aka husband error).
But let me start at the beginning.
I'd put up placeholder pieces of newspaper above our gecko tank weeks ago, but I finally got tired of looking at those squares, so I asked my husband's help putting up the frames we'd purchased at IKEA, with just some random patterned paper until we can get some better art.
So he hung up the three frames on the above wall and one on another wall, and we went about our day (of course, stupid me thought I had all the time in the world to snap a picture of the new frames). Enter foreboding music.
About 24 hours after hanging the frames, we were watching TV when one of the frames came crashing down on the gecko tank and onto the floor, shattering the glass and the frame itself. Obviously cheap IKEA frames are not meant to withstand a fall, even onto carpet, because as you can see from the above pictures, it's pretty much destroyed on all corners, with a big dent on one side from hitting the tank on it's way down.
And it's all thanks to the Command strip coming detached from the wall. But I'm going to have to say it was probably user error, because now, a week later, the other frames are still merrily hanging where they should be.
But now I'm in a bind, because we only bought 4 of these frames, and I'm not planning on making the 1 1/2 hour each way trek to IKEA anytime soon. So I guess the only thing I can really do is steal the matching frame that we hung near our new hanging lamp, and put it where the broken one was hanging, since I really had my heart set on three frames on this wall.
As for the wall near the lamp, I picked up these smaller 12" x 12" frames at Joann Fabrics (on sale for only $7.49 each, since they were having huge sales for Memorial Day weekend. I also picked up some fabric to make curtains for our bedroom for 50% off, but I'll save that for another day.). I still need to find some placeholder scrap booking paper for these, but then I think I'll hang them staggered with one higher and to the side of the other one.
Hopefully considering they're on a different wall from the other three IKEA frames, nobody will notice or care that they're not the same.
Now for the really hard part, finding actual art to put in the frames! Which I always seem to have a really hard time with. Actually, I'm having a really hard time with this room in general--I just feel so 'meh' about it all, especially since I'm not allowing myself to buy any new furniture, and we can't paint the walls. And after this broken frame incident, I might just have to take a break and concentrate on another room in our house for a while.
Do you ever get burnt out on trying to decorate rooms in your house? Or feel like you could get over being burnt out if someone would just give you, oh, $5,000 to change it all up? ;)

Oh no! I hate it when stuff like that happens! Hopefully the rest of them will hold!
What a bummer on the broken frame. I don't think anyone would notice that the other two frames on the other side of the room are different. If they do, they'll think it was planned that way from the beginning!
Ugh, major bummer! I definitely get burnt out on trying to decorate and keep things affordable. I can't wait until we buy a home and have the funds to decorate with more upscale pieces. Ikea is great in many cases, but I guess you do get what you pay for.
Aww, boo to the broken frame. No one will care that all the frames in the room do not match. Also, couldn't you paint the walls and then re-paint them white before you leave? I always tell myself I'm going to do that, but am usually too lazy.
@Kim, boy do I wish we could paint and then re-paint before moving out, but it just doesn't make sense to invest the time and money to do it when we're only planning on being in this place for a year before we buy. Plus, we have to give them a crazy 60 days notice before we're moving out, so they can find new renters, meaning we'd have to have the walls repainted by 10 months into our lease.
I've just been watching too much HGTV lately is my real problem!
Ugh! This exact thing happened to me with a command strip in my office. Happened about 2 hours after I hung a frame I did not think was very heavy at all...and the strip was supposed to be strong enough for 5 lbs. My frame broke too. Saaaad. I think you're right though, the new frames will look nice and it doesn't matter at all that they're slightly different, especially being on a different wall.
Definitely sad face!!! I'm working on spray painting frames to place in our lounge (aka living room) and we have a "no nails in the wall" rental clause, so I picked up a ton of those hanging clips. Yikes, hope they are strong enough, as they are quite small! Otherwise we will have double sad faces!
I didn't want to burst your bubble on the command hooks but I've never gotten anything to stay on them. I actually had my framed and matted wedding invite and map crash down. Miraculously it didn't break. I would have been very sad since it was a gift.
Oh no! that sucks...but it definitely seems like it was user error! At least IKEA frames are somewhat cheap!
Ah! That stinks. Sorry the command strip didn't stick for you. Hope you find some art you like for the other wall!
Yikes! I used something....not the exact same thing you used, I forget what it was called...to hang some square frames in my kitchen in my townhouse. And after a year of staying in place (it worked!), I finally took them down to move...and it brought chunks of WALL with it. Now I'm scared of the stuff.
Can't wait to see what you put in the shadow box, you craftster, you!
Woah, I had no idea command strips were strong enough for picture frames. Well, usually strong enough :P I love your new shadow boxes, can't wait to see what you do with them. Maybe a blessing in disguise huh?
I tried to hang a painting by my grandfather using those and about three hours later we heard a huge cracking noise.
Thankfully, the cracking was the tape unsticking and it was poised over the couch! Sad face over here too, lady :(
OMG your face in these pics.. hilarious! Seriously though, those hooks are crap, my husband and I were falling asleep one night and a cheap plastic Ikea clock crashed to the floor.
I always have a hard time deciding on art too so we wind up going up with MOAR WEDDING PICTURES!
