I'm still using one of those cheap, narrow floor mirrors everyone seems to get for college. And the plastic frame has fallen off. And it probably hasn't been cleaned in at least a year.
Needless to say, it's quite difficult to determine in it if I like an outfit I'm trying out for the first time!
So, when I was trying to find something to wear to a friend's house Saturday night, something that would be appropriate for the mid-60s cold snap we were having over the weekend, I reverted back to using my camera and remote timer. I really do think Cher from Clueless was onto something when she said she never relies on mirrors, and only takes polaroids of her outfits! Because taking photos of my outfit with the three belt options I was considering was way more helpful than looking in my dirty, narrow mirror.
This is the outfit I ended up wearing, perfect for the almost cool fall weather, with a pencil skirt, knee high boots and long sweater, but bare legs and arms, since it isn't quite fall yet.
Long Black Sweater: Target (purchased last year), Black Top: Target, Jean Pencil Skirt: Express, Belt: Anthropologie (newish, purchased on clearance for $19.95), Boots: Steve Madden Intyce (newish, purchased new on ebay for $89), Headband, Earrings and Bracelets: Probably Target
This was a really interesting exercise for me, since I've never done the belt-over-sweater thing before. It's a hard look to pull off when you have a big ribcage like I do, and I've always been worried the sweater would just be too bulky. But after trying a skinny, medium and thick belt, I think it worked best on me with a medium or skinny belt. So now I have a new look I can play around with more!
And since I went with this mixed material belt, I had to dig out some natural, wooden bead bracelets. I just couldn't bring myself to go out without something to tie in the natural braided material on the belt!
Also, I now know why people have raved about the Intyce boots for a while now--they are so comfy, and I think the low heel will be perfect now that I live somewhere where it snows. I don't think I would pay the $150 regular price (since I'm cheap, and have never spent that much on a single pair of shoes), but waiting and searching ebay, I'm happy with the $89 I paid because I see them getting a lot of use this fall and winter.
Now if only it would cool down some more so I could wear the gorgeous new coat I got a few weeks ago! But no, we're going back up to the mid-80s this week. Guess it will be a while until I need to break out the tights and scarves. :(
Have you embraced the belt-over-sweater look? Anyone already bought a new coat or boots for the fall/winter season?

Love that outfit and I totally need a pair of boots like that for Fall/Winter.
Morgan! I love that outfit on you! So fab!
You look adorable! I adore the "belt over sweater" look on others, but I think I'm too busty and short-waisted to pull off the look correctly. you are totally rocking it, and I LOVE those boots :)
I tried the belt over sweater thing and yeah, it is tough having a rib cage, isn't it? :) I found a stretchy belt works well over stuff. It doesn't make you look like a brick. Oh it's going to be soooo nice when we get consistent days of fall weather. Come on fall!
I LOVE the belt over sweater look... and I do agree that skinny belts tend to be easier, especially with more billowly sweaters.
Very cute! I'm dying for it to get cool enough around here for me to dress like that!
I love fall fashion AND I love those boots! I have pretty big calves (boo for running), is the opening at the top of the boot pretty roomy?
great outfit. especially love the boots. i need some awesome boots!
ps we still have a "college" mirror!
Hi Casey,
I've had the same problem with boots too, but these one have an adjustable buckle on the side that allows you to make the opening bigger or smaller. I know it will come in handy especially when it comes time to wear them over jeans!
Hope that helps :)
I love the belt over sweater look. I bought one last season, but haven't figured it out yet. Can't wait to see your coat! I'm dieing to wear mine, too!
Hi Morgan! We both follow Kim from high heels city streets so I had to stop by! I totally dig your style and the belt over the sweater is a fantastic look on you, love the bracelets too! How fab is that belt, $19.95 from Anthro? I never find anything on sale there! I am like you, when it comes to shoes, I want them for a low price because I have a tendency to wear them out fast and $89 was a great price! Let's encourage Kim to do more outfit posts, I think she'll be a pro in ZERO time, I gave her some tips on how to feel 'less awkward,' even though I thought she looked great in today's post :D So glad to discover your blog! Have a great day...and I hope you'll stop by! :D
What a cute fall look!!!
Guess what? We got up to 80 whole degrees this week.
You look awesome, love the look, its chunky and lots of separates, perfect for fall! You'd fit in well in NZ, just saying :)
LOVE the sweater dress. MM!
