While cleaning up my desktop files earlier this week, I came across this little 8 second video I took last year, but never shared.
Before moving to North Carolina, I'd never seen a firefly before (or lightning bug, as they're called in the south). I was fascinated by them, and just like a little kid, I just had to catch one in a jar to see it up close.
If you've never seen one either, here's what they look like when they flash.
(don't worry, I released this little guy outside right after filming him)
The lighting bugs are just starting to come out for the season, and it's so neat to sit on our deck after sunset to watch for the little flashes between the trees. I'm sure we'll be doing some of that this weekend, while we rest in the evenings after long days of hauling paver stones around to build our fire pit area!
Hope you all have a great Memorial Day weekend. Hopefully I'll be back next week with the good news that our fire pit is finished, and we got to enjoy it Monday evening, but we'll see!

I feel old and out of touch - I forgot lightning bugs existed! Now I really want to go to my parents' house to enjoy them.
I'm sure you will get to enjoy your fire pit this weekend - sending good and productive thoughts your way :)
Good luck finishing your fire pit! I remember seeing a lightning bug for the first time after moving to DC and being so amazed! One of my friends who was interning with me had no idea what it was and totally freaked out. I always love watching for them when we're out running or walking in the evening.
It's crazy to me that u had never seen one! We used to catch them and race them up the family room windows when we were little :) Here's a fun little trick I have a feeling you might love - grab a lighter and when it's getting dark out and the fireflies are all out, light your lighter for a second then turn it off. Do it a few times and all the fireflies will light up in response to your flicker and they'll all start coming to you! I used to do that when I smoked on my parents' doorstep.
And p.s. I am very excited for our get together, too!
You had never seen a lightning bug before! Aren't they fun? I bet you have a TON of them in the woods behind your house. As kids, we would run around and catch them and then be so sad in the morning when they were all dead in their jar that we didn't poke holes in... hehe. :)
I grew up catching those bugs. My husband is from California and never saw them until he moved to the East coast. I guess I took them for granted!
I love lightning bugs! I used to catch so many when I was little. I know it's sad but when you're driving and one hits your window, it's kind of neat they glow for a second and then... don't. I might check out some of the other videos like the backyard turtle! Have a nice weekend!
that is amazing! and the first time i've seen one. how cool.
That is such a great idea, I'm totally trying this tonight!
