Early Friday morning, we got up early and headed to Uhaul, to get a trailer hitch installed on my husband's car. You can probably guess where this is leading....and yes, Friday evening we picked up our newest home renovation tool, a 5'x8' utility trailer!
Can I just tell you how excited we are about this purchase?! It is going to make our lives 400 times easier, because now we can take loads of trash to the dump (free for residents), buy and bring home furniture from the flea market, make huge trips to Ikea....and all at our leisure, without having to rent a truck or pay delivery fees! Plus, now we don't need to rent a dumpster for our bathroom renovation, which was going to run us $225, and they couldn't even put the dumpster up close to our house, it would have had to go on the street because our driveway is really long and narrow.
We'd gone back and forth about making this purchase for the past few months. We were torn between buying an old beat up truck (but didn't really want to have to deal with another vehicle to park, insurance and repairs), or maybe trading in one of our cars for a new SUV. But my husband's car has pretty low millage, and my car is getting up there in miles, but I've only put about 2,500 miles on it since I started working from home, so we didn't really need a new car. Plus we both really like our cars, and neither of us wanted to give ours up. So a trailer hitch ($329 installed with lighting wiring) and utility trailer ($629 + tax) was the best answer for us. As my mom put it, it's not the most exciting option, but it's definitely the most practical!
Especially because now there will be no more of this:
Precariously tying plywood to my back window and hanging posts out of my sunroof to get them home from the hardware store
We've already taken a full load of demolition debris to the dump in our new trailer, and have another full load waiting to be taken early this morning before work. This trailer is going to pay for itself in no time, considering going to the dump is free, but there's a charge for curbside junk removal!
How do you deal with your hauling needs? Anyone else proud utility trailer owners, or are you lucky enough to own a truck or SUV?

Isn't it funny what becomes exciting as you get older? I absolutely LOVE getting and using practical stuff like this now lol I have a cordless drill on my wish list right now....I don't think my 20 year old self would have ever understood haha I can't wait to see more reno progress pictures! Your mood board looks amazing!!
you two are totally official diy renovators!
How do I deal with my hauling needs? Pay for delivery or call my brother to come down from Santa Rosa with his truck, LOL. This is a great purchase, and will definitely make your renovations much easier. When I'm ready for a new car, I'm going to get a CRV - they're not too big for the city but have a ton of "hauling" space in the back.
That is great! We have a small Jetta, and so far, we've had to rely on delivery or pickup for most large items. It hasn't been too big of an issue since we're still renting, but by the time we buy a house, I'm hoping to have an SUV to make things easier.
I think this purchase is a perfect solution to your hauling needs! I'm hoping that our rides (SUV and truck) will be able to handle all large purchases in the future.
hooray for a trailer! we sometimes have to stuff our car to capacity and have been considering getting a larger car, but a trailer would be nice too.
Spiffy! Very nice.
We own a truck for this purpose and have used it mannnnny times. We might get a trailer someday, too.
Hi,
I have a quick question about your blog, do you think you could e-mail me?
