This week I’ve been fixating on the logistics of figuring out this cross country move. Namely, how we’ll be getting everything the 2,800 miles to the east coast.
When we moved from Washington State to California in 2004, we had a lot less stuff than we do now, after all, we had just graduated college and had been living in small apartments. And even then we had to rent a 14 foot Uhaul + vehicle towing bed for my husband (then boyfriend) to drive, and it was pure hell driving straight through the night, with one cat and two geckos in my car with me. My cat kept trying to crawl under my seat or down between my legs, just because she knew I didn’t want her to, and I was afraid she was going to get under the foot petals and cause a wreck. It got so bad that at one point I had to grab her by the scruff of her neck and throw her in the back seat! Not. Fun.
And now we live in an almost 2,000 square foot house, own a full size pool table, fridge, washer and dryer, lots more furniture, and have two more cats. And I drive a smaller car now than I did back then.
At first my husband suggested we just hire movers to load and transport all of our belongings, including both of our cars, and we’d fly. But there’s no way I would ever risk checking our pets on an airplane—way too many die each year. And after some research, we learned that most airlines will only allow one pet carrier as a carry on per passenger, although you can put two animals in the same carrier if they’ll fit. Well, our fat cat would barely fit by himself, and our two smaller kitties play fight too much, and it was just going to be a huge headache, not to mention the fact that there’s no direct flight, and you can’t exactly take cats out of their carriers for a walk in a busy airport (rescue kitties = scared as heck kitties with strangers around). And even if we could manage a day of torture, flying with the cats, there would still be no way to transport my gecko, so flying there is basically out.
So, we have to drive there. All 1 day and 21 hours (per Google maps). It’s not going to be fun either, with three cats and a gecko in a car, staying at Motel 6’s that allow pets, but it's better than the flying option.
But now the next question is, what about our belongings? Do we hire a moving company to move all our stuff and a car, and we drive together with our pets in our second car? Do we rent a Uhaul and towing bed and do it all ourselves again? Can we at least hire help to load and unload the Uhaul?
Even figuring this out is a PITA.
Ideally, we would want to do option #1, and have full service movers. But after submitting quotes on mover’s websites, they all want to come to our house to evaluate our stuff. Which in the first place makes me nervous to invite possibly shady people in to take stock of our belongings. And right now all we really want is a general dollar amount, since we’re not even sure we’ll go this route, and it’s much too early in the moving-scheme-of-things for them to need to traipse through our house (we have a LOT of crap to throw away/give away still). Even if a quote is off by $1000, it is still better than nothing at this point. So the best I’ve gotten on this front is a quote from one mover’s website based on basically nothing. They had me enter nothing more than the zip codes we’re moving from and to, the date of the move, and the number of rooms in our house, and returned a $7,500 quote. Yowza! I knew this was going to be an expensive move, but that is a LOT! But again, it was based on pretty much zero info, so who knows if it’s accurate.
After getting the $7,500 quote, we went on the Uhaul site to price that option out. And for renting the truck and car trailer for 10 days, it’s about $3,200. Plus about $250 to get 2 movers for 4 hours to help us load, and another $250 for the same to unload the Uhaul. All in all, a little over $3,700 + gas to drive ourselves. Which certainly sounds a lot better than double that to have someone else drive, considering we have to drive with our pets anyway. But if we could get a quote for movers closer to $5k, I think we’d still jump on that option.
I’ve always enjoyed logistics planning in the past, but this is all just becoming a huge pain in the ass! Can’t we just snap our fingers and be moved already?
Have you ever had to deal with professional movers before, or are you like us, and have always just did the Uhaul thing yourself? Did you have a good experience if you did use pro movers?

I moved myself from western Oregon to eastern North Dakota in 2005. I went the Uhaul route, and I would definitely do it again rather than spend so much on movers. (I know you have already decided all this by this point, but I would recommend to anyone else to use Ryder trucks instead of Uhaul--much better quality/newer/safer. But Uhaul is OK.)
I had a truck with a 12' trailer, which I proceeded to drive through the mountain passes and Yellowstone park and all that. Took me 3 days. It was very pretty really! Stressful but pretty. I had one cat at the time and what I did, was I bought a rabbit harness and put that on her. Then I put her on a leash and tied the leash to the back seat headrest, and had a bed back there for her. I also gave her a children's chewable benadryl (recommended by my vet) which calmed her down. She didn't ENJOY the ride, but she really was pretty chill by day 2 (and the benedryl helped). The leash/harness kept her out of my lap and she spent the ride either in her bed, on the floor in the back seat, or trying to get into the boxes next to her.
I agree with the pain in thr ass comment! I would not enjoy this type of planning, either. When I moved to the East Coast, I had just graduated from college and still lived with my parents. I brought two suitcases and two carry-on bags, and started from scratch with everything else. The next time we move, things will be nowhere near that easy.
There's an excellent chance you've already made your decision given that this was written months ago, but we made a move from SoCal to Minnesota about 8 months ago and used PODS moving. It really made the whole thing SO much easier on us. They dropped off the POD and we packed at our leisure then they picked it up and hauled it to MN and stored it for a month for us until we got into our new place. Then the dropped it off again and we unloaded and just called when we were done. All in all, it cost us about $3k for the POD. The best part was being able to load and unload on our own so we could go as fast or slowly as we needed too.
With our move we're going to be flying with our cats. Since we have two it will barely work. Although it's expensive to carry them on! (no way would I ever check them as baggage!) I'm a bit worried about one of the cats because he's a huge scardey cat. I hope he does okay traveling.
Since my company is moving us we're using a full service moving company. But they did have to send out a guy to do a quick walk through to see how much stuff we had. He just kind of looked in each room and made a few notes. Asked if we had original boxes for large things like our plasma tv. But he didn't go snooping or anything. So it wasn't as creepy as I would've thought. ha ha.
Good luck!
We always hire professional movers, even to move around in the same city. I just can't deal with trying to do it myself. We pack everything, they load up everything and unload everything at the new place. $7,500 is steep, but I would pay it to not have to deal with it.
I hate to break it to you, but you aren't going to find a $5000 movers quote. Good luck.
We tried getting quotes for everything from movers to those Pod things for our move from Oklahoma City to Miami, FL but nothing was under $4000. We quoted UHaul and Budget trucks and Budget ended up being significantly cheaper. If you can find a student ID, they give 20% off to students too. If I remember right, we had a 24ft truck and a towing thing for the car (not a flat bed, but the kind that hitches the front wheels) and it was about $2400 plus gas. We moved with our 40lbs dog and a little car too, driving a 26 hour drive over 2 days. I feel your pain and wish you luck! On the brighter side, some of my family live in Charlotte, NC and I almost went to UNC, it's a nice state!
We used movers to move halfway up the East Coast and it was the best money we've ever spent. Not only did they completely wrap our furniture so it didn't get damaged, but they moved it all in for us (which I can't imagine you'll feel like doing after an almost two day drive with cats). That alone was worth the money, plus the gas in those Uhaul truck adds up to an astronomical sum. It was worth it for us to use movers, basically.
Having moved a few times my advice comes from the side of "what will cause less stress????" I highly recommend using movers, but since you are planning to drive regardless, perhaps get quotes on moving the big items, the appliances and furniture. It's still not cheap, but you don't have to worry about transporting so many items yourselves, plus worry about the safety of your items while at hotels or put up with random weather. When I drove cross-country, I got hit by two sandstorms. Stick with the larger companies who have been in business for a while so you are not worried about the shady mcshadersons. I cannot recall the companies we used, but I'll try to dig around. You might have already figured this out though... :)
Traveling with cats suuuuucks. When Josh and I moved from Ohio to DC (only a 6 hr trip) we got drugs for the cats. Well, the drugs worked on one of them but the other one? Not a bit. Josh moved the cats w/o me (I followed a few days later) and it was a ROUGH drive for him. So if nothing else, I'm wishing you a smooth ride with the animals. Good luck!
As an army brat I've moved more times than anyone could ever imagine in a life time. (I think my count, at 25 is over 35?) When you're moving with the military life is easy, mom mother usually ran the moves (as my dad would be off somewhere training) and they hire movers to move your stuff and pay for you and your family to get there.
The times we've moved without the army have been a lot rougher. I helped my mom move from Wisco to Florida with 2 cats and 3 dogs and my two younger siblings. It was hell, but we did get it done ourselves!! Honestly, if you can pay a few guys a couple hundred $$ (or friends beer and pizza?) to pack a Ryder or whatever for you, I'd probably go that option.
Can't wait to find out what you've chosen!
Eeeek, we moved from L.A. to S.F. in a U-Haul and that was hard enough, I can't imagine going across country. But I think I would choose the DIY route as well, I'm always interested in saving money where I can. It's going to be interesting to see how you pull this off! You can do it!
