Oh my gosh, you guys! North Carolina just keeps getting better and better, especially for an animal lover like me!
I've been so good about scheduling my blog posts lately, that I haven't even had a chance to share these pics from almost two weeks ago. My husband and I woke up early on Saturday morning (a sure sign we're getting old, sigh!), and decided to go run all of our errands first thing, so we could concentrate on getting stuff done around the house in the afternoon.
Well guess what my husband spotted on our back patio as we were about to get into his car? Two little turtles! Which you probably never guessed, considering the title of this post!
Our cats were quite scared of the turtles, since I'm sure they'd never seen them before. This is only about the 3rd time I've even seen turtles in the wild myself. It was fun to watch how cautious the cats were too, especially since I knew the kitties probably couldn't hurt the turtles even if they tried--the turtle would just hide in it's shell.
(That's a "WTF is that thing!?!" stance if I've ever seen it!)
Of course, knowing me, I shoved my camera at my husband, and had to get in on the checking-out-the-turtles-fun!
(I named this one Raphael--he was totally the bad boy of the two! TMNT, anyone? And great, now the TMNT song is gonna be stuck in my head all day!)
(Don't worry, I totally washed my hands after touching it!)
My sister, who used to have a pet tortoise, said she thinks they looked like Eastern Box Turtles. Look at it's cute little claws!
This is one of my favorite pictures, because it makes my kitty look so brave. But in reality, it's a miracle I snapped this photo because it's the only time he got closer than about three feet to it. He dashed up, sniffed it for a second, then darted away!
I think the turtles are braver than my cats, this one walked right up to my husband and checked out his sandals.
Off into the bushes. I keep looking on the patio every morning since to see them again, but so far no luck.
And on another note, did you know geese are scary as hell?
The day after we saw the turtles, we went on a hike at a park with a big lake near our house. The Yelp reviews of the park said there were cute ducks and geese, and recommended bringing some bread or crackers to feed them. This was not good advice.
I brought about 6 slices of bread, and at the end of our hike, I went down a side path to the lake where a bunch of geese were. I started casually breaking off small pieces of bread and throwing them towards the geese as they all made a beeline for me. And they're fast suckers! Before I knew it, one was barreling down on me, only about 10 feet away, HISSING AND DROOLING, with murder in his eyes and about 20 more geese on his heels.
OMG, I wigged out, and threw the rest of the slices of bread behind me as I ran screeching back up to the boardwalk area, while my husband just shook his head at me. But dude, I didn't know they were gonna be demon geese! From far away, up above them on the boardwalk, they look all sweet and cute.
Or at least that's what they want you to believe.
Next time, I'm just sticking to the turtles!

The picture of your gray cat stalking the turtle is priceless! I had a good laugh reading this post this morning, especially when I got to the part about geese being scary as hell. I agree completely.
Geese are totally scary! I used to go to a park in Austin all the time that has a bunch of geese and they used to chase me and my friends if we got too close. Totally crazy animals!
Hahahaha. You totally didn't grow up in our neck of the woods. I HATED Canada Geese growing up. They do so much field destruction that they used to put up fake fences to keep them away. I've seen more than enough school kids get attacked on the playground. STAY AWAY FROM CANADA GEESE.
And I'm glad you washed your hands, turtles can carry all sorts of diseases. They're cute though :)
Hehe. The little turtles are soooo cute!!
LOL at "hissing and drooling with murder in its eyes"! You crack me up. I'm not a fan of geese. They honk outside of the office where I have acupuncture done - it can interrupt the relaxation process big time! Cute turtles, too. The only time I've seen them in the wild is while snorkeling in Hawaii and Belize, but those were sea turtles.
I love that picture of your cat with the turtle! So cute! And oh man, those geese are insane! They used to be all over my old workplace (in NJ) and the company had a dog whose sole job was to chase them away, because they were so aggressive and pooped all over the place. They are especially fearsome when they have babies!
Aww, the turtles are so cute! My husband swears up and down that he was attacked by a pack of geese and I always thought he was full of crap! I'm definitely more inclined to believe him now...!
Ah! The turtles are soooo cute but I agree on the geese, those things can be a-holes. :/
Those box turtles are so cute!! I love finding turtles outside. And, yes, geese are mean!! I would have done the exact same thing you did.
Lucky, I want turtles on my patio! And seriously, geese are pure evil, especially if they have babies around...a friend's dog was attacked when we were strolling by a pond because all the little goose babies were just wandering in the same general area. I've hated them ever since.
The cats are cracking me up! They're like, ALIENS!!
Geese are MEAN. We used to live next to a pond, and the geese would come up on our front porch and honk at our door all day. They'd bite at us if we came out without bread, so every time we left the house, we had to throw bread at them and run. I hated those things! And they pooped EVERYWHERE.
You are so adorably West Coast I can hardly stand it. Never, EVER feed geese. Ever. I'm surprised the suckers didn't follow you home. This is how geese work: 1.) Find a spot to have babies. 2.) Have babies. 3.) Return to same spot EVERY SINGLE YEAR to have more babies. 4.) Repeat for eternity. I hate geese.
Turtles, on the other hand, are so cute!! Except huge-ass snapping turtles. Stay away from those, too.
Oh my god, who would have thought. Geese are evil. I'm glad you are enjoying all that nature!
Turtles! My favorite!! I seriously sat here with a goofy smile reading this post :D Minus the geese part...as exhibited by other commentors, geese are not your friends.
