Some photos from our weekend trip to Sunset Beach, NC.
Our bed and breakfast, a couple of blocks from the water.
The best part of the B&B was the screened porches over the waterway.
Back at the beach the next morning.
Pretty empty around 10am.
But around noon, these annoying people set up right in front of us. I don't know what it is, but we seem to be magnets for rude people at the beach. Look how everyone else is spread out, but the people to the left of the photo are like 3 feet away from us. Seriously, would it have killed them to walk an extra 15 steps before sitting down? I'm not sure why people always think I want to hear their dumb conversations when I'm trying to relax on the beach!
Also, I'll just say it now. I'm not a public beach person. Which I didn't realize until this trip, but walking all the way to the pier to use the pit toilets with no where to wash my hands, and listening to screaming children is not my idea of fun. I guess I was spoiled on the beaches in NorCal, where hardly anyone was ever there. Of course, the water was too cold to swim, so that might explain it. Next beach trip, I need a secluded resort, or a private house, so I can have a much less crowded beach, and have a place to use a real restroom and wash my hands!
After our second day at the beach, while getting ready for dinner, my husband called for me to come quietly out on the porch. Deer! :)
And then I decided we needed a picture together on the porch.
This zoomed in photo of one of the shots on the porch cracks me up. You can tell he just loves having his photo taken, haha!
Posing on the porch.
We spotted this bright green dragonfly walking into the restaurant for dinner.
After dinner our last night at the beach, we were treated to a pretty sunset from our porch.
Right after the sun set behind the clouds, it was time to open this, and relax after a long day in the sun.
Have you made it to the beach this summer yet? And what type of beach person are you, public all the way, or do you prefer a little more seclusion and quite? Anyone else a magnet for people sitting too close to you at the beach when there's plenty of open space?

You had me at blueberry wine. That stuff is heaven! I'm not a huge beach girl (I love it, but I don't like to sit at it) plus we're from less populated places in Florida so it never seems crowded. I guess thats what you get living in the country!
And how was the blueberry wine?
I hate crowded beaches, as well. Our favorite beach is Caswell Beach on Oak Island. My family used to get a house there every year before my folks moved down that way. It's a very quiet beach. Also good is Oak Island in general. You can just drive down the beach road (which is off the main road) and find an area to slide into to park.
Unfortunately, there is no getting away from rude people. The last time we went to the beach on Oak Island, we left our stuff up near the dunes and moved our chairs down into the surf for a few minutes. There were maybe three other couples around...all spread out nicely. Well, while we were in the surf, some idiots sat down LITERALLY 2 feet from our stuff. Then, they started smoking. Argh! Now I'm all out of sorts over beach etiquette!!!!
So gorgeous - I love the sunny yellow room and the porch/deck!
Yuck. I can't stand public/crowded spaces. I was glad we went to Jamaica in the off-season because, although it was a private beach, it was full enough for my taste (with other resort-goers) and they always wanted to sit near us (and smoke or something equally irritating). My hubs and I think it's a "Group mentality" thing. It's the same if you sit down in a nearly-empty restaurant, or you're the first people to enter a movie theater. The next people will inevitably come and sit RIGHT BY YOU. (You're sitting there, so it must be a good spot, right?!!)
But on the other hand, your pics and vacation look great! Forgot to throw that in there :)
Too funny. I've been going to Sunset and Ocean Isle for the past 17 years. My husband actually proposed to me on the beach in Ocean Isle totally surprising me after a sweaty morning bike ride.
I find it kind of hilarious you thought the beach there was crowded. It is funny how relative everything is. I am from outside of Philly and we started going to NC to avoid crowds on the beach and I think the beaches in Sunset and Ocean Isle are sparse. (Although, being near the pier does mean you encounter more people that farther up the island.) Did you guys try Sunset Slush? Where did you eat?
We always rent a house and this year we had an awesome set up on OIB where our house belonged to a private pool on the beach front so we could walk in there to use the bathroom. I hope you guys enjoyed your time there. It holds a very special place in my heart.
love that you two are so good about taking trips, and you find these great places to stay!
Great photos! Looks like an amazing vacation :) I made it to the beach in Hawaii last month, but it's not really beach weather here so I haven't been back since. I am definitely not a "public beach" person and am most certainly not a pit toilet/no running water to wash hands person. Private all the way!
Sigh, what a great trip!! I have not made it to the beach once this entire summer. I'm not sure what is wrong with us. We have gone to the lake, but no beaches. Too bad. I live through you. :)
Too funny! I was just going to comment about how this post makes me nostalgic for our beach weeks at Yaupon Beach on Oak Island as a kid when I read Jill's post above about also being on Oak Island!
Yaupon was fantastic for my family - my mom's side would gather there for 2 weeks every summer and it was wonderful. We always rented two houses right on the beach (so there was always a place to run in and wash your hands, go to the bathroom, get away from the sun for a bit as necessary), and we always had our beach stuff set up right in front of the house. And there were no shortage of annoying kids (us) or mean staring uncles to make sure that no one sat very close to us (plus at least when we went there the beach wasn't all that crowded).
Now as an adult I'm the same way - I need either a fairly secluded beach or definitely my own place to retreat to. Can't stand huge crowds close to me for relaxing at the beach!
It looks beautiful there, but I agree that public beaches aren't usually for me, much for the same reasons as you, including issues with bathrooms. On our recent trip to St. Maarten, we lucked out because the resort had it's own beach with shady cabanas that were just around the corner from a real bathroom with nice stalls and running water. It makes a huge difference!
Ahhhh, this looks like heaven :)
And I like all beaches, public, private, don't matter to me!
Looks like a fun weekend getaway! What a cute B&B.
Love the B&B with the yellow walls!! Looks like a nice little vacay!
looks like such a fun beach trip and amazing beach house! loving the sunset photos. we live very close to beaches and i'm more of a secluded/quiet beach person :)
That looks like an incredibly relaxing trip! And I'm totally not a fan of crowded beaches either!
The B&B looks so nice! I'm not a huge beach person, but I love being by the water. I much prefer a secluded beach than public.
I'm a huge beach fan, and I'm pretty used to public beaches. I would be way annoyed if people didn't respect a little personal space though.
I'm loving these photos!
I'm fine with public beaches - I grew up on them, but I would have a problem with rude people violating personal space.
I'm loving these photos! What an awesome weekend getaway!
Wow, how gorgeous is that B&B and how gorgeous are those sunsets?!

Well, I personally love the beach...I don't think that would come as a surprise to anyone! i like them all, but I do share your distaste for public restrooms. Blechhh. I always make sure to bring a bottle of hand sanitizer with me to the beach!
