So I started thinking back to the Florida Keys. Last spring when planning our March Florida trip, I'd done a little initial research at possibly extending our trip to include the Keys. But at the time of planning, we were knee deep in wedding planning, and didn't think we could swing the expense and extra time off work, so I let it go.
But there's no reason we can't look at the Keys for next year! Especially since we could do a lot more activities there, spend two extra nights, for a decent amount less than the potential Bahamas trip I posted about yesterday.
Florida Keys with Lots of Activities and In-Boat Shark Tour
Vacation Length: 7 days, 6 nights
Cost: $3,757.86
Time of Year: Early May
Tuesday: Fly out of Raleigh, NC early morning and pick up rental car in Miami, FL around 9am. Drive 33 miles to Shark Valley in the Everglades, stopping to pick up supplies for a picnic lunch on the way.
Enter the Everglades and rent bikes and take a 2-3 hour bike ride to view gators in Shark Valley to get a taste of the Everglades (be sure to give the gators plenty of space though!).

Eat the picnic lunch you picked up earlier, and then take a few short hikes of your choice (Bobcat Boardwalk, Otter Cave Hammock Trail, Anhinga Trail, Gumbo Limbo Trail, Pineland Trail, Pa-hay-okee Overlook, and Mahogany Hammock all look like good possibilities.).

By mid to late afternoon, say goodbye to the everglades and drive the 2 hours south to Islamorada. Check into The Moorings Village.
Unpack, change, and head across the street to Morada Bay Beach Cafe for dinner, after watching the sunset on the beach, of course.

Wednesday: Lazy day! Spent enjoying the beach and the pool, cocktail in hand.
Finish off a relaxing and lazy day at the Green Flash Lounge for dinner and drinks at sunset.

Thursday: Pack the car, check out of the hotel and begin the hour and 45 minute drive to Key West. But the first stop along the way is only about 4 miles south, to buy a bucket of fish to feed the giant tarpon fish at Robbie's.
Along the drive, pick out a restaurant to get some conch fritters for lunch.

After lunch, keep driving until about 40 minutes before getting to Key West, and stop in Big Pine at the National Key Deer Refuge. Stop at the visitor center for map, and taking the advice of a TripAdvisor.com review, "Drive down to the end of the road into the preserve. There is a culdesac at the end just past a subdivision. Park there and get out of your car. At this point you are being watched by the deer. Rattle a bag or crunch a water bottle and then get the cameras ready. Within seconds 4 to 10 deer will come up to you wanting to be fed."
Don't feed the deer, but have your camera ready for a photo op with the deer.

After seeing the key deer, continue to Key West, and check into The Harbor Inn. It sounds like there really aren't super nice beaches in Key West, and hotels on the water are insanely expensive ($450+ for a water view), so instead, we'd stay at this cute little bed and breakfast with gorgeous gardens and a nice pool for much less. This B&B is located only a couple of blocks from the best place to view the sunset on the Island, Mallory Square, near the happening end of Duval Street. Another perk of The Harbor Inn is that breakfast, as well as a complimentary happy hour from 4:30-5:30 six days a week, is included.
Spend the afternoon and evening wandering around Key West, having another wonderful seafood dinner and watching the sunset from Mallory Square.

Friday: Spend the morning and early afternoon on a snorkel and kayak tour with Danger Charters. Enjoy sailing, reef snorkeling, kayaking through mangroves, and a gourmet picnic lunch with beer and wine.
Return to the hotel to clean up and around early evening, again head to Mallory Square, check out the nightly art festival, and watch another gorgeous sunset.

Saturday: Check out Key West day! Sleep in and spend the afternoon walking down Duval Street, shopping for souvenirs, eating, having some drinks, and just wandering around wherever we feel like.

Sunday: Spend a relaxing morning by the pool.

Then take a 2 1/2 hour Shark Eco Tour in the afternoon. Learn about the area sharks as they come right up to the boat, and enjoy drinks and snacks.
After returning to shore, enjoy one final sunset from Mallory Square, followed by a seafood dinner.

Monday: Check out of the hotel mid-morning, and drive the about 3 1/2 hours north to the Miami airport, drop off the rental car, and fly home.

The main difference between this trip and the Bahamas trip from yesterday, other than the fact that it's over $1,400 cheaper and 2 nights longer, is the number of activities. Which I love doing, but my husband less so. So who knows what we'll choose! Or maybe we should take advantage of our new proximity to the Caribbean and go even further south to somewhere more exotic, like Antigua or Jamaica?
Which of these two vacations would you pick? Less days, more expensive Bahamas with less activities, or more days, less expensive Florida Keys with lots of activities?

If you guys do this trip, you have to rent a convertible. I did this about 10 years ago - drove from Miami to Key West and back. We stayed in Islamorada for a night and I think you're smart staying there two days. We didn't get to do much there staying just overnight. The boat trips you're planning look so fun!!
I would pick the Keys, even though I've been there half a dozen times, I still love it!
A few tips:
-Don't go to the Everglades without mosquito repellent slathered on. It's beautiful and wonderful, but there are plenty of biting insects.
-Make sure you feed the tarpon early or late in the day. By the afternoon, they're pretty tired out.
-As you go through Tavernier, check out the Florida Keys Bird Sanctuary. Donations requested, but you can see all of the birds that they're rehabilitating, and you can feed the pelicans (for free!) I believe every day at 5.
-The Turtle Hospital is in Marathon, and way worth your time. $15 per person, and it all goes to rescuing and rehabbing sea turtles.
Both of the animal things are really laid back easy going things, so your hubby shouldn't be too worn out by them - but I think you'll really love them!
I've been to both places. I loved the Bahamas, but I'm a huge fan of the Keys. I also noticed you picked one of my favorite spots- Morada Bay Cafe. Yorkie had suggessted I go there on my last trip and it was my favorite part! We went to their full moon party and it was a blast.
I agree with Brandi about the Bird Sanctuary. I'm kind of afraid of birds, but Jim loves them, so he had fun doing this.
I think I liked the Keys better because I loved being able to go to happy hour and listen to bands on the beach while dining. Snooks is a little further up than Islamorada, but it's such a fun palce for dinner, if you have time. I've been a couple times and highly recomemnd going to see Luke Glenn or their steel drum night.
This trip looks amazing, too. I think I'd do the Keys instead. I'm like you - I like to do lots of excursions on trips as opposed to laying around on the beach. My husband is more low-key, but he tends to get restless, too.
I wasn't able to get through this whole post before I screamed: ALABAMA JACKS.
Get the best fritters I've ever had in my entire life BEFORE you hit the keys on Card Sound. Its a hole in the wall that only locals know and you HAVE TO GO: http://alabamajacks.com/
LOVE Robbie's. My dad goes to KW about 8 times a year and makes a stop at Robbies almost every time. While I'm usually 100% against these types of activities, I kind of LOVE it.
Aren't our little key deer the cutest? You and your obsession with deer, how sweet!
Love love love love LOVE KW. My family has been going my entire life and we have family down there so I've been to and done almost everything! I honestly don't think you're spending enough time there as there really is a lot to do (esp for food and drink lovers) but this is a great start. Thank you for reading up and learning that KW has bad beaches - it is not a beach island so there is no point to stay on the beaches! The B&B you picked sounds absolutely divine :)
Oh. And get ready to take thousands of photos of the wild chickens and the Hemingway cats!

I read about Alabama Jacks, sounds so good! And if it weren't for you, I wouldn't even know how cute the little key deer are!
Awesome, thanks so much for the extra tips! The bird sanctuary and turtle hospital sound like must-stop places!
More days, activities & a better price? I would totally go for this trip! We did an Everglades tour at the end of a cruise a couple years ago and saw gators from an airboat. I was a little scared at first, but it was awesome overall!
I would go for the longer trip. We had conch for the first time a couple years back and those fritters look so tasty!
I've actually been to the Bahamas and even though I
FL Keys for sure!! I've been to Grand Bahama Island years ago and wasn't extremely impressed myself! And I love that you have so much to do in the KEys too!
For all the times I've been to Florida, I've never been to the keys so it gets my vote. And speaking of deer, I thought of you yesterday when I was on my run and right next to the path, a little baby bambi was having dinner. SO CUTE!
Awwww, so jealous you got to see a baby deer!
i love reading this because it's like i went on the trip! the food looks quite delicious and i'd love to sail and kayak, too. it's also great that there's a good savings if you stay in the keys. but i'm sure either one you choose will be wonderful.
Ummm you totally forgot to add "get a slice (or 20) of key lime pie" - just sayin... ;)
