Choose one word. Encapsulate the year 2011 in one word. Explain why. Imagine it’s one year from today, what would you like the word to be that captures 2012 for you? In the spirit of where this all started… this is the same first prompt from 2010. |
For me, the word that best sums up 2011 is change.
At the beginning of this year, my husband and I were in the early stages of planning the biggest, most life-altering change we'd ever embarked upon together. You would think this would have happened in 2010, when we got married, but no, the biggest change we experienced together came this year, when we uprooted our lives and moved 2,800 miles across the country.
We went from this:
(A Sunset Cruise on the San Francisco Bay, June 2010)
To this:
(Anniversary trip to the North Carolina Smoky Mountains, June 2011)
Our decision to move across the country didn't come lightly, but we made the decision together to change our lives for the better, and move to a more affordable place to live than the San Francisco area. In April of this year, we arrived in Raleigh, NC, our new hometown, and have been experiencing many more changes as we get used to living on the "right coast," and in the south.
Next year, I hope that the word that will sum up 2012 will be progress. We made so many changes in 2011, all for the purpose of being able to live a more affordable lifestyle, and finally purchase a house. Once we become homeowners, I will definitely consider us to be making progress toward our life goals. I'm turning 30 next spring, and all I'm asking for is a house as a birthday present. :)

Change is hard and you two are handling it beautifully it seems. Kudos!
I dealt with the same kind of change in 2011 and one of the reasons for us was a more affordable life out of California and I while I do miss parts of "home" I do not wish the rat race it was for sure!
I can't imagine moving across the country like you did. (Though Raleigh in great!) It sounds like you're adjusting well though. Hopefully 2012 will bring you a house!
Awesome post! Yes, your life has changed a lot . . . I'm sad that you left the "Left Coast," but I know you had wonderful reasons for doing so. Homeownership is a goal that many of us share, and I think it's great that you made such a huge change and sacrifice to achieve your goal sooner :)
Hope you're able to get that house next year! What a big change a cross country move must have been.
I love this prompt! This has definitely been a year of change for me, too, in so many ways, and I also hope 2012 brings progress in many more areas. I hope your dream of owning a home comes true very soon!
change is a good thing :) and i like that "progress" is your word for 2012!
you've had such an exciting year! Your 2012 word sounds like something good to look forward to! :)
(Found you via WEverb11) That picture in NC is gorgeous! I love me some San Francisco since I'm a California girl but I've heard that North Carolina is beautiful!
such a huge change for you two--i was so impressed with your decision process and energy in making it happen. i just moved a few states away and i'm all pooped.
you have definitely had a year of change! I'd say you've had a ton of progress too... Cheers to another year of progress!
