But today I want to talk about another room that I had all planned before we moved in, my home office/craft room/closet bedroom.
Yes, that is a whole lot of function to cram into one bedroom! But I'm making it work because a) I love having extra space for all of my clothes and shoes, and b) because at our last place it was a pain having to share my office space with our guest space--it was always a scramble to clean up my messes when my BIL decided to stay the night without warning. So it's nice now to have my office and crafting space in the same room as my clothes, so I can have one big messy room that is all mine. :)
And it's quite the mess right now, with fabric scraps on the floor from sewing patio chair cushions, and open boxes of crafting supplies all over, that I keep digging through, because I don't have very good storage at the moment. But that's about to change, because I'm getting organized and ready to start working on finally getting this room really set up.
First, let me show you my floor plan. This took a bit of work, to make sure I could fit everything in the room that I needed too. What I've done is basically split the room into two areas, the desk side of the room, for my home office space and crafting space, and a closet side of the room, for all of my way-too-many shoes and clothes.
And the color scheme for the room (also our wedding colors!), which I've shared before when I was discussing all of the colors for the rooms in our house:
I haven't done much on the closet side, right now my clothes are hung up on my garment racks, but eventually I want to build room dividing cabinets to hold my clothes. Sort of like this inspiration photo, but with clothes rods instead of shelves.
I've even drawn up plans for my closet rod cabinets, the two in the middle of the room will look like the ones below on the left, and the one on the right side of the room will look like the one below on the right.
Other plans for the closet side of the room include new lighting, a dresser makeover, recovering my chaise lounge bench, and hanging moulding on the wall to display all of my heels, like so:
But with all room updates, I've got to set priorities, and so I think I'll be starting over on the office/crafting side of the room first. I've just ordered some shelves and baskets to get all of my crafting supplies off the floor and out of moving boxes. And I also plan to recover my desk chair, add curtains and art, and really just make everything look streamlined and organized. No more making messes and digging when I can't find that craft item I need!
To illustrate my plans for this room a little better, I've put together some 2D mock ups of what the room will eventually look like, just like I did for our guest room.
First we have the wall that is on the left when you walk through the door to the room. This is going to be my crafting and office space. See all the nice, organized baskets of crafting supplies on shelves? That's the first area I'm going to be tackling next week!
Next, if you turn 90 degrees to the right, this is the wall that is opposite the wall the door is on. You can really see how the room will be split into two distinct areas with the room dividing clothes cabinets in the middle. I've also mocked up the moulding high heel rails and what my chaise lounge bench will look like once it's recovered.
Turn another 90 degrees to your right and this is the wall the closet is on (in black below, since I've removed the door), and the pass through door to our bonus game room. I've already hung my fun, wavy mirrors on the wall between the two doors, and I can't wait to add a pretty chandelier.
One final 90 degree turn to your right brings us to the wall that the door to the hallway is on. This is the wall my long dresser is on (which I plan to eventually update, since right now it's just boring old oak), and where I plan to hang a large mirror for doing my make up. I think it will be a nice touch to frame out the mirror with the same moulding that I'll use to hang my heels from on the opposite wall, and I'll also eventually be sewing a custom cover for my ironing board.
First thing's first though, getting the office/crafting side organized. I can't wait to share the progress next week, once my new shelves and organizers arrive! And it's going to be even more fun to see how this room evolves over time, and how closely I'll end up following my mock ups.
Anybody else enjoy making floor plans or mock ups as part of your room planning process? Got any room organizing planned for this weekend or next week?

so exciting! you've put so much thought into it--it's going to be such a great room when you're all done.
Can't wait to see your plans come to life! Looks like you are making the most out of that one room.
I love the idea of hanging shoes from crown moulding - it's like shoe art, which I love so much! I love all of your ideas and can't wait to see how the room comes together :)
I just love your mockups that go from this post to a done! post! you always do such a nice job.
I can't wait to see how this turns out! Right now my office space is also shared with a guest bedroom, and I can't wait to someday have a space — no matter how small — that is just for my workspace!
I love your vision and think the way you've planned to divide the room is perfect! I agree that it's a pain when office space and guest space are shared, since that's the way it is at our place right now. I can't wait until we someday own a home with more space to work with.
What a great way to store/display high heels! I've never seen that before. Mine live in perspex boxes except I'm rubbish at putting them back in their boxes after wearing...
I love that you do the mock ups - I lack the patience and vision, which is probably why one year later I still don't have a well organized spare room! It looks fabulous, and I can't wait to see how it turns out!
I'm so excited to see this make-over! I think my home office is the next room I'll tackle so maybe you'll inspire me :) And as a side note-- I just bought that exact chandelier for our guest bedroom (It isn't hung yet so no pics on my blog thus far)-- and it is SO pretty!!
this looks great. i like that each space has a function and it will be so stylish!!
I love the shoe storage... your shoes are so gorgeous it will be an awesome way to store and display them!
