I'm going to be spending Friday night grouting our downstairs bathroom floor tiles (exciting Friday night, I know!), so things will be dry enough for us to install the beadboard wainscoting Saturday afternoon, paint it, and finally be able to put our toilet back in place on Sunday. I can't wait to have a toilet on the main floor of our house again!
But that means we need to make a decision on what color of grout to use ASAP. For our shower surround tile, we just went with a standard white grout, which went very nicely with our white-with-light grey-marbling tile.
But for the floor, I'm torn between two options, either slightly darker grey, or slightly lighter grey than the tiles themselves. We're using Spectralock epoxy grout, which is a bit more expensive than standard grout, but you don't have to come back and seal it later, it is stainproof (coming clean even after weeks of being soaked in cherry kool-aid), and it lasts longer and just holds up better than regular grout. But the downside is that there is a limited number of colors it comes in, so we can't get an exact match to our light slate grey floor tile.
Really, that's OK though, because I want a tiny bit of definition with the tiles, I just can't decide if we should go lighter or darker. So I made a little tester board with scrap pieces of tile, and I'd love to get your opinions!
Here is a zoomed in photo, under indoor lighting conditions. The slightly darker on the left (Slate Grey), lighter on the right (Silver Shadow).
And the same samples, in shaded, natural lighting. Our bathroom has a quite large window, so it will be getting a lot of natural light in the daytime, through the plantation shutters we plan on installing.
I think I'm leaning toward the lighter option, considering we'll have white baseboards, white beadboard and all of the white tile in the shower. But the darker the grout, the easier to clean/shows less dirt. I'm so torn!
Which grout do you like best with our grey tiles? The darker on the left, or the lighter on the right?

my initial thought was the lighter one too. I like the dark if you want more definition between the tiles in natural light, but I was definitely drawn towards the lighter one when first looking at the pictures!
I like the lighter one better, but I hear you about the cleaning, too! From a strictly "looks" standpoint, though, I'd go with the lighter. Good luck on Friday!
I like the lighter grout better. The darker looks kind of dirty... and the lighter shows of the tile better IMO.
I'm feeling the lighter one. It brings out the brightness of the tile.
I'm drawn to the lighter option as well you will def see a lot more definition in the floor
I was tossed with the indoor lighting shot, but I'm leaning towards the lighter grout after looking at the natural light shot.
I'm strictly in the minority here but I say the darker one hands down.
I vote the lighter grout -- especially if the other grout is white, and the trim is white, etc. Can't wait to see the final reveal!
I'm going to go against the grain and say darker. I think it brings out the natural beauty of the tile more and will be easier to maintain.
I vote the lighter one. The darker one just looks like it is dirty to me.
Usually I like darker grout but I think the lighter one looks better with these tiles. Can't wait to see how it turns out!
I vote for the lighter grout.
I vote lighter. The darker kinda looks like it's just dirty. Your guests might think you haven't cleaned!
I am partial to the lighter one too.
Go for the darker grout---who wants to scrub floors if they don't have to?
Have a fun Saturday! It will definitely be exciting to get your downstairs toilet back!
I like the darker one for sure. In the natural light, the lighter grout looks okay, but overall, I think the darker looks fantastic. =)
I like the darker grout option too. I think it looks great in the natural light.
I prefer the lighter grout, by far.
Based on the first 2 pictures I was going to say the darker grout, but in the third picture I like the lighter grout better! The dark looks nice though, and I think it would be easier to keep clean since it won't show dirt like the lighter one. Good luck picking one and have fun grouting, can't wait to see pictures of the finished bathroom!
If I have to pick I pick lighter, but I would like it better if it was a littttle bit darker. It'll probably eventually look like the darker one though! :) (I hate grout!!!!!)
i like the lighter option :)
