There are still a few things in here that I'd like to do, like build a bench for the end of the bed, and I still have one blank wall with no decor on it yet. And someday we'll get to scraping the popcorn ceilings, like we did for our downstairs rooms. But it's definitely an improvement over how this room first looked after we moved in!
I'd always wanted this room to have a subtle beachy cottage feel, ever since I planned it out last February. Originally I was going to get two large prints or canvas wraps for the wall below that had sandy beach scenes, but once I stumbled across these two Mediterranean coastline canvas wraps, I fell in love. They add just enough pops of color, along the the books on the shelves, to break up all of the teal, white and grey we've got going on in here. Plus, they look really great with the gold sunburst mirror I made.
I'm still really happy with how the bookcases I painted and made backer boards for turned out, and if guests are ever in the mood for reading while they're here, they've got a selection to choose from.
And I really like this newer version that I made of the board and batten headboard, the crown moulding just makes it look way more polished.
Probably my favorite feature, the sunburst mirror made from wood shims.
And you already saw how I updated this old bedside table, by painting it and adding new drawer pulls.
We can't forget the lamp, that inspired the teal color of the headboard, shell art and other accessories.
In fact, I'll show a few photos with the lights on, since it's always interesting to see how paint colors look in different lighting. The color I used on the walls was Shaker Gray by Benjamin Moore, and the teal is Surf Blue.
It only took me 6 months after buying most of the accessories, and a year after I posted my Photoshop mock up that laid out my ideas, to circle back and (mostly) finish this room!
And as for how much it all cost, here is a breakdown and source list:
- 1 gallon Natura no VOC shaker gray paint ($55)
- 1 quart Natura no VOC surf blue paint ($15)
- Paint for moulding, doors, 3 bookcases and side table (already had)
- Wood to make headboard - six 1X4X6 boards ($54.72), two 1X6X6 boards ($26.76), and crown moulding ($19.97)
- 2 floor lamps ($99.98) (Can't find them online anymore, similar here)
- 1 table lamp and shade ($28.03)
- DIY sunburst mirror ($43)
- Teal sheets ($24.99)
- White comforter ($34.99)
- Curtains ($34.99)
- Brushed nickel curtain rod ($25.99)
- White chair slipcovers ($157.98)
- Throw pillows ($90, all from Target)
- 2 Canvas wraps ($165.86)
- Shadow box frames for DIY shell art ($40)
- Shells, books, vases, bookcase items (already had)
Total for complete guest bedroom update: $917.26
Not too shabby, if I do say so myself. Reusing a lot of things we already had, like the bed, bookshelves and chairs helped save a lot, since a little paint and slipcovers goes a long way. And now I'm excited to have more people come and stay with us, now that we have a pretty room for them to stay in!
Do you have a dedicated guest room in your house? Have you done any decorating to it, or just left it as an untouched spare room, like we did for so long?

Wow this is simply stunning. You did an amazing job! :)
Oh, em, gee. Can I live in that room, please??? I'll pay my rent in cookies!
It looks fantastic! I love how you styled that little bookshelf ... in our next house we'll have room for lots of bookshelves, hopefully!
It all turned out so nice! I'm sure your guests enjoyed their time in that room.
OMG! I'm super impressed. It's like a boutique-y hotel. Can I stay over!?
beautiful! I'm a bit biased because grey and turquoise are our master bedroom colors. I really like the pops of white though!
It looks so awesome!!
It looks great! I love the colours.
I loooove the gray!! We've tried gray in two rooms now, and both have turned out off-gray. I think it's because they are in eggshell finish (one is the guest bathroom, one is our baby's room). I'm guessing you used flat! I love the gray, teal, and white together, and I love the beachy feel!! Our original guest room is now our baby's room, so when we moved it to the other spare room, we made it a little more grown up and arranged for people who stay for longer periods of time. It was great for when my dad lived with us for 3 months to help with the baby! I love all of your renovations!!!
You have great decorating taste! I love the canvas art.
Wow, you really transformed that room! I love everything about it! We currently have a guest room/office in our apartment, but I'm hoping to separate the two once we buy a house someday.
This room looks amazing! My favorite detail is the sunburst mirror. The artwork is great, too. We definitely do not have a dedicated guest room in our city apartment, but my mom has threatened that she won't come and help with any babies unless she has her own room and bathroom. Good thing I'm not pregnant yet! I'm sure your guests had an amazing stay in this beautiful room.
SO great!!! I love all the little touches you have shared with us coming together in one room. I want that MIRRORRROMG!!!
this room turned out so nicely. you are really great with diy and design.
