I can't believe it's been a year already. I also can't wait to see what my gift is going to be! ;)
The first year anniversary is supposed to be a paper gift, plastic or a clock, if you follow the traditional wedding gift giving guidelines. Which seems a little silly to me, after all, if I want to get my husband something specific, I'm going to do it. But actually, this year I said 'what the hell' and one of his gifts does involve paper (hint: it's robot related, since he's an engineer). But I'm going to hold off on sharing until after I give him his gifts, on the off chance he visits my blog.
But one of the gifts that I can share is the fun plans I put together (and paid for!) to celebrate our anniversary, since my hubs already know about them.
I'd mentioned a while ago that I was bummed that I had to cancel the awesome cabin we'd rented in Yosemite, since we don't live a 4 hour drive away any longer. But guess what? I found an even more amazing, cheaper cabin to rent in the North Carolina mountains, about 3 1/2 hours away!
I'm so excited, you guys! This girly-girl love, love, LOVES camping/renting cabins, and I can't wait to see what the mountains on this side of the country have to offer! Not to mention how PIMPIN' this cabin is compared to the other one--our own private 10 acres with mountain views, a hot tub and grill on the huge deck, 900 feet of riverfront on the property only a 10 minute hike away, and just check out how amazingly un-rustic the inside of this place looks!
{Source, from the cabin rental site}
We'll spend two days just hanging out and relaxing on the deck and down by the river, and one day checking out beautiful viewpoints and hiking along the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Appalachian Mountains.
And the best part? We're staying here for 3 nights, starting on our wedding anniversary day, for only $587.24, including tax! The just 2 nights we'd had booked in Yosemite was a lot more, at $782.55. Everything really is cheaper out here. Plus, I'm super stoked to see a ton of lightning bugs, since the cabin is located near the supposed lightning bug capital, Boone, NC.
What are you doing (or did you do) to celebrate your one-year wedding anniversary? And will you/did you stick to the traditional gift guidelines, or did you just get your SO whatever you wanted regardless of tradition?

Wow, wow, wow!! That looks like heaven, I'm totally jealous!
And I can't believe it's almost been a year for you guys! Time flies!
Wow, I wouldn't mind cabin-ing in that cabin! :)
Looks fab, hope yous have a wonderful time!
We just celebrated our 1 year anniversary with a trip to Bratislava & Vienna which I would totally recommend if you are ever over in Europe.
For a gift, we bought a paper one together; we made a travel map by getting a paper map, sticking it to foam board and framing it before sticking pins everywhere we have been together & separately.
Looking forward to seeing our gifts when you reveal them.
Sounds awesome! Our anniversary is coming up in about a month, too!
Wow, it looks gorgeous! And so inexpensive!
For our 1-year, we didn't do paper gifts. We didn't do any gifts, actually! We took a trip to Santa Barbara (it rained SO HARD we could hardly do anything), then got fed up with the rain and drove up to Cambria where it was a little drier. So it was a water (rain) and wine (tasting) anniversary rather than a paper one for us. :)
You're going to love how much more you can do here on less! Now, come to GA and stay in the mountains (okay, hills really) and see me!
That place looks perfect! I love camping, too, and I'm going to bring this up to the fiance as a possible mini-moon :)
Enjoy your stay!
What!?!?!?! That place is amazing. I hate camping, but this looks nothing like camping. Amazing!
I am so glad you're loving NC!! I hope you will get a ton of fireflies :)
Daaaaamn that cabin IS pimp. A whirlpool? A deck for grilling? That looks like the perfect place to spend a 1 year anniversary! Can't wait to hear stories/see pics cuz I know you'll have 'em :)
Ahhhhhh LOVE that you're planning the one year anniversary :) Great cabins, looks like a perfect cozy getaway. I'm gearing up my research for heaps of camping here in on the North Island. It seems every nook and cranny of this island is perfect camping grounds!
That cabin looks gorgeous! Jealous, completely.
We're planning on just going out for a meal to celebrate our first anniversary as we'll hopefully be new owners of a furbaby by that point and can't go away for the weekend.
Can't wait to see the presents you get for him - may need some ideas!
Oh wow - that cabin looks absolutely amazing - you are going to have a wonderful anniversary for sure! kjpugs and I went to college somewhat close to Boone- it's a lovely place indeed!
P.S. - have you found a Cookout yet? You have to stop at the nearest one to get an insanely good milkshake. MUST. Do it NOW.
Here's something funny: I used to live in the SF Bay Area and my FAVORITE vacation spot is right where you're located - Blowing Rock (swoon!), Banner Elk, and Beech Mountain.
Also, if you want some of the best breakfast or bbq of your life (they are open for both lunch and dinner) is Pappy's in Banner Elk. The sausage is to die for! There's a pig on the sign, so you know it must be good! ;)
Try to trek up to Grandfather mountain...you'll be amazed. I could go on all day about what to do out there, but I'll stop here. Have fun!!
