I haven't done much furniture painting in the past, other than the headboard I made and spray painting some outdoor chairs. But I figured it couldn't be that hard, I'd just start with a coat of primer to make sure I get a good base for my paint.
Yeah. About five minutes after I got done priming that shelf, I noticed the primer pulling away from certain spots. And for some reason it was only on the inside of the shelf.
Sigh. I guess this is what I get for throwing caution to the wind and not bothering to sand these laminated particle board shelves first!
Luckily I noticed the issue before I started painting the second shelf, so I was able to sand it before priming it, with no issues.
So lesson learned. When in doubt, spend that extra 10 minutes sanding something down before painting. It would have saved me a bunch of time, now that I have to go back and sand that first shelf down after the primer dries, and make sure to leave a clean surface to paint on again. Thank goodness at least the third shelf and apothecary table were just raw wood, and primed just fine the first time.
Have you learned any crafting/painting/DIY'ing lessons the hard way?

I learn ALL my lessons the hard way! For some reason, I believe deep down in my heart that instructions don't apply to me, so I can take whatever shortcuts I want when doing DIYs.
Yeah, I don't believe that anymore.
;) Can't wait to see how it turns out! I love apothecary tables so much; there's so much character in those suckers.
#1, That's genius to paint the shelves and I dont know why I didn't think of doing that to an ugly shelf we have. #2, Now I know I would have to sand those shelves before painting them. Two lessons, one post, THANKS! :)
Good to know! I never would have thought about that.
Aw, so frustrating! I'm like Brittany - I learn ALL of my lessons the hard way because I'm terrible about thinking I can do it on my own without any help!
I'm always learning the hard way. Good thing you caught it early!
