And while it has been more efficient for one of us (mostly my husband) to run the table saw while the other person supports the wood (mostly me) while building our fireplace facade, I couldn't resist trying out the saw for a little project of my own. I'm a lot more comfortable with table saws than circular saws anyway, probably because it reminds me of fond memories helping my dad build stuff in the garage growing up. Also, it helps that the saw blade is stationary, and I don't have to worry about it flying out of my hand like with a circular saw!
But it had been many, many years since I'd operated a table saw, so for my first solo project, I started small, with a little rustic tray for our downstairs bathroom counter top. I modeled it after this tutorial, but tailored the dimensions to hold the three apothecary jars I wanted to place in the tray. Just some scrap wood we had in the garage, a few passes through the table saw (using a push stick to keep my fingers safe when cutting narrow widths), some glue, nails and wood stain, and I had a little custom sized rustic tray (check out the tutorial I linked in for instructions). I even spruced it up further by adding some little green knobs to the sides.
All accessorized in the bathroom, next to the still unpainted door frame and yet to be filled mirror frame.
My husband thinks it's silly, but I thought the mints in an apothecary jar would be a nice touch for guests using the bathroom. And it doesn't hurt that they're green to match the color scheme!
Of course, if I showed you a zoomed out photo of our downstairs bathroom, you'd see that we've still got a little bit of work to do, what with a caulk gun and other miscellaneous tools on the other side of the vanity. The weekend after next is blocked off for finishing things up in there though!
And we have been making progress when it comes to other accessories. I got this cute cubby shelf that needs to be hung on the wall above the toilet. I love the little white numbers on the shelves and how they tie in with all of the white trim and beadboard in the room, and can't wait to fill the shelves once it's mounted.
Plus, the stool from my original bathroom inspiration post, from all the way back in July, is finally in its new home in the corner. It will be stacked with some fluffy white towels soon enough!
And I've been working on finding art for the walls. I found this fun canvas wrap at World Market, for half off. $64.99 for a 40" x 30" piece is a great deal, and it will perfectly fit the space on the wall behind the door. The green is a close match to our wall color, the grey goes well with our floor tile, and the blues will give a nice contrast when up against our green walls. I can't wait to hang it!
Have you ever used a table saw before? Or done any accessorizing around your house lately?

I love your little tray and the cubby holder - so cute! I've never used a table saw but my dad was a woodshop teacher and we definitely had one in our garage growing up. I wish I had learned more from him while I could! I would love to be able to work with wood and build my own furniture :)
Great job on the tray! I've never used a table saw, but I know that is something my husband has his eye on after we get a house.
LOVE the mints! I think they are necessary since they match.
I used to use a lot of carpentry tools in sculpture class in college. For some reason, instead of empowering me, I became more conscientious of messing up and ruining my projects. Like cooking, carpentry isn't always clean cut and simple - there's some fudging involved and I'm a bit scared I won't be able to salvage some projects. I need to get over that!
And I love that numbered cubby - great find!
It all looks so cute! Love the jars.
Great job creating the tray! I love that canvas print, too. What a great find! I've never operated a table saw and would be afraid I'd hurt myself, but my grandfather has always used one to make us all kinds of things.
Your tray came out so cute! And it's a great match to your cubby thing--which is a fabulous find, by the way.
And I'm with you--I will forever sing the praises of World Market. Just picked up some knobs there that look exactly like some I've been eyeing at Anthropologie, but they're a third of the price. Score!
I saw the same cute print at World Market and considered it for my bathroom! I love the apothecary jars--where did you find them?
I'm impressed, as always!
The jars are from Crate & Barrel (http://www.crateandbarrel.com/set-of-4-glass-canisters/s102353). They have similar ones at Pottery Barn too, but they're more expensive.
I love the little tray you made. I wish my hubby had more tools I could play with. (He wishes he had more tools too... Not so I can play with them, though) :-)
I love the tray! The pretty knobs on the sides make it :)
The bathroom is looking great, can't wait to see it when you get the last little things finished up!
You are so talented! I love the little box. The green knob is such a fun touch.
your box is so pretty! and i like the use of jars in it. mints would be a fun treat for guests. i haven't used a table saw, and am a bit scared to do so. but you did a great job!
Its great to see that you are customising your own items in your house. I'm a massive fan of customised furniture it is great to give your home a nice personalised touch.
